Seattle launches first downtown train wrap since the city's light rail inception

City University of Seattle ( approached Clear Channel Outdoor Seattle with a request for an out-of-the box approach to its advertising campaign “Be City Wise.” The result was the launch of the first downtown train wrap since the city’s light rail inception. Seattle’s “Sound Transit” light rail runs from downtown Seattle to the airport, travelling alongside Interstate 5 for a portion of that commute.

Clear Channel provided Adobe Illustrator files of the train wrap to Eugene, Oregon-based Haugen Graphics. Haugen used its EFI Vutek UltraVu 150 printer and Onyx ProductionHouse RIP to image onto 3M’s Scotchcal Changeable Graphic Film using INX Triangle VUV ink. Total printing time was 15.5 hours. Haugen then used its GBC Orca III laminator to apply 3M’s Scotchcal Luster overlaminate, which took an additional five hours.

The graphics were printed in eight sections—a left, center, and right section for both sides of the train, plus a front and back section. The total square feet of material used:
2463 for the 12.25-foot-tall project.

“Full-wrap train advertising has never before been launched on the central light rail system in Seattle, and will provide spectacular reach to consumers throughout the region,” says Clear Channel Outdoor Seattle president Olivia Lippens. “This unique train wrap will have the ability to reach Seattle commuters and I-5 traffic, along with thousands of airport travelers daily—all while growing our partnership with Sound Transit.”
