Going Pink for the Cause

BC Cancer Foundation board chairman wraps personal car to support the fight to end women's cancer

When John Jennings, board chairman of the BC Cancer Foundation in British Columbia, Canada, wanted to support The Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women’s Cancers this past summer, he simply drew a straight line between his cause and his own personal car, a BMW 535Xi. The fact that he knew the owner of Ampco Grafifx, Dann Konkin, supplied the final element in creating a vivid pink car wrap that would garner attention for the cause.

“It was a nice coincidence of wanting to do something visible in support of The Weekend, having a great car to use as a billboard, and having a friend whose business had the expertise to do the wrap without risk to my car,” says Jennings.

Jennings himself chose the photos of two women he knew who were battling cancer, and the BC Cancer Foundation supplied Ampco with completed design and
graphics files. The overall pink color tied into the pink ribbon that is used for breast cancer campaigns, and pink and purple PMS colors were specified for color matching.

Final output was done on Ampco’s EFI Vutek 150, and the shop also
utilized its Graphtec cutter and Orca laminator for the job. In all, Ampco invested more than 16.5 hours into the BMW, including install time.

In addition to the weekend event, the car’s campaign fundraising cycle also included a route from Vancouver to Seattle in June plus a fundraising walk in August. And of course, Jennings utilized the car for normal day-to-day tasks through the summer, which in itself resulted in more than a few rubberneckers. “I was at Park Royal Shopping Mall and came to a three-way stop at the same time as a young teenage girl in her car. Her delighted look of shock, hands waving in excitement, with an obviously mouthed
‘OMG!’ was fun.”
