BBI Display Systems and its amphibious and portable billboards partnered with Vincent Printing Company and Media Solutions to produce a floating billboard commissioned by the California Department of Boating and Waterways (CADBW). The CADBW was looking for a way to reach the private boater demographic, and decided that a floating billboard was the perfect solution.
The 24 x 14-foot floating billboard was part of a campaign promoting the CADBW Clean Vessel Pumpout Grant Act Program. Touting the slogan, “Boat Responsibly—Keep Our Oceans Clean. If It’s Your Boat, It’s Your Responsibility,” the billboard was part of the group’s effort to support the Clean Vessel Act, originally passed by Congress in 1992 to help reduce pollution from vessel sewage discharges into US waters. As part of its commitment to provide clean and safe recreational boating in California, the Department of Boating and Waterways is serving as the state’s grant coordinator, providing boater education programs to promote public awareness about boat sewage and its proper disposal. The floating billboard is towed throughout Marina del Rey in Los Angeles on select summer weekends.
“The ocean presents the harshest environment a product will face and the winds are unpredictable,” says Erick Wickland, marketing director of BBI Display Systems. “Mesh allows for windflow while on the water, reducing the sail effect. These billboards also fold into carry bags and can be transported/shipped to any location, allowing us flexibility with non-traditional campaigns. The BBI Display Systems can essentially be setup in any location and are not restricted to the same locations as steel structures.”
Media Solutions in San Francisco executed the file design and sent it to Chattanooga, Tennessee-based Vincent Printing Company (vincentprinting.com), where it was output as four separate banners on Seattle Textiles’ Woven Mesh using an HP Scitex XLJet 1500 using HP XL300 inks and Onyx ProductionHouse 6.5 RIP Two of the banners measured 162 x 276 inches and were printed in one piece; the other two measured 158 x 85 x 16 inches and were tiled in two pieces, then seamed together using a Leister welder. Print time was three hours.
Vincent Printing’s finishing department also added grommets by hand, which takes about 30 minutes per banner. Total production time was seven days, start to finish.
