Thanks to two annual awards competitions, visitors to the annual conference of the Digital Printing & Imaging Association (DPI) can see some outstanding achievements in digital printing and product innovation. In preparation for this year's conference Oct. 15-18 in Atlanta, GA, the DPI is accepting entries and nominations for these two award programs through September 2, 2003.

The DPI Andre Schellenberg Competition recognizes member companies for excellence in digital imaging. Awards are presented in five categories: digital photo print, electrostatic, inkjet, textile (transfer or direct), unique applications, and fine art

Member firms must have created the finished output in their own facility. Each company may enter up to five entries per category. “To encourage participation, we're including one free entry with each membership in DPI,” says Dan Marx, DPI director of communications and service. Each additional entry, after the first free entry, must be accompanied by a $20 entry fee.

Two awards will be presented in each categories”?one for entries submitted by Regular members (technology users) and one for entries from Associate members (manufacturers, suppliers and distributors). All entries will be considered for “Best in Show” and “Best in Digital Creativity” awards.

The DPI Product of the Year award honors digital imaging products that have had major and beneficial impact on the industry in 2002/2003. Product of the Year awards will be presented in four categories: software and related systems, media, output devices, and finishing.

To be eligible, the product must have been in actual production with installation and commercial use during the calendar year ending Dec. 31, 2002; the first day of manufacture may have been prior to 2002. Previous winners of a DPI Product of the Year award are not eligible.

Any company may nominate a product or products as Product of the Year. However, to be eligible to win, the product must be manufactured by a firm exhibiting at the SGIA 2003/DPI Conference, and on display at the trade show.

Entrants in the output-device category are required to print and submit a test image created by DPI. This will allow conference attendees to see how the same image output from different digital-printing devices look when presented side by side.

Full details and entry instructions can be downloaded from the association's website.
