Bullish on Output

Burbank, California-based Crush Creative completed this Cattle Drive exhibit for the Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History in Texas. The project comprised not only the 12 x 100-foot wall mural, but also the difficult pipe-wrap graphics and two other exhibits. Output for the mural was with an EFI Vutek UltraVu II 3360 onto Fredrix Polyflax canvas; the pipe graphics were executed using aDurst Lambda.

Crush Creative recently achieved G7 Master Printer Certification from IDEAlliance, which identifies print providers trained to use the G7 Proof-to-Print Process and can
produce proofs or print to the extremely stringent G7 standard.

Some additional notes on the project from Barry Polan at Crush Creative (crushcreative.com):
• The Cattle Drive project was one of three separate large exhibits that Crush did for the museum. The other two included an Energy exhibit and a Dinosaur Gallery. For the latter, Crush printed and installed an 85 x 25-foot dinosaur image in vinyl and installed it onto a prepped wall.

• The pipes were particularly difficult to execute because of their size, says Polan. “In order to wrap the pipes, we had to print the pieces with additional bleed so they could overlap on the backs of the pipes when we installed them. Also, the aggressive media/adhesive is not removal or positionable, so we therefore had to be very careful when we installed these so they lined up to each other and were properly spaced apart.”

• The print shop also created many wood backframes designed to be installed onto concave and convex shaped walls. “We had to go to the museum site to make a template out of Masonite by scribing it to the existing finished walls, bring the individual templates back to our shop, and shape the frames to perfectly align with the walls. This was very difficult to do accurately.” It required 10 full days of install and 6 months from outset to completion after we tested many items for the client before deciding on the route to take for best printing.

• The job was managed by Seruto & Company (seruto.com) in Pasadena, California, and the graphics were designed by Hunt Design (huntdesign.com), also in Pasadena.
