The 2015 OBIE awards, hosted by the Outdoor Advertising Association of America, celebrated simple advertising strategies that stirred up genuine feelings in its audience. “These winning campaigns need no explanation,” as the awards website put it.

Creative agency Campbell Ewald earned a silver award in the public service category for its “Nice Guy” campaign for Haven, a nonprofit organization that supports, counsels, and shelters victims of domestic abuse. At first glance, the advertisements seem like just words, but with a closer look viewers discover another, more jarring layer.
