Nikon has introduced its D40 digital SLR, a compact and lightweight, 6.1-Mpxl digital SLR camera with simplified features and a redesigned, visually intuitive menu system.

The camera features the ability to shoot 2.5 pictures/sec up to 100 shots and a response time of 0.18 sec. Images are immediately processed and recorded to the camera's SD memory card. Its rechargeable Li-ion battery powers up to 470 shots.

A 2.5-in. color LCD screen on the back displays menu options, pictures in playback mode, and the new information display system that shows camera and shooting information. The screen also features built-in help and new Assist Images that aids in the selection of appropriate settings for many camera features by displaying a sample image typical of that setting.

The D40 includes eight preset modes, including a new Flash Off mode that shuts down the camera??”??”??s flash and boosts its ISO so users can take pictures in places where flash photography is not allowed, inappropriate, or when they prefer the look of naturally lit pictures. Its advanced controls, such as Aperture-priority and Shutter-priority modes, offer greater creative control over the look of pictures.

A Retouch menu offers in-camera image editing features such as D-Lighting to brighten dark pictures, Red-eye correction, Image Trim, Image Overlay, Small Picture, Monochrome, and Filter Effects (Skylight, Warm filter, Color balance).

PictureProject software is supplied with the D40 and is useful for image enhancement, transfer, and organization. Nikon??”??”??s Capture NX software for image editing is optional.

The D40 is packaged with the new 3x zoom 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor lens. The D40 is compatible with all of Nikon??”??”??s AF-S and AF-I Nikkor lenses.

Price: $599.95 for body and lens.
