Nik Software (formerly Nik Multimedia, see below) has announced that it has reached an agreement with Nikon Corporation to jointly develop and distribute photographic software and technologies. As part of the agreement, Nikon has made a capital investment in Nik Software (the first such external investment in the San Diego-based company).

Nikon and Nik will co-develop software products and distribute those products through Nikon's world-wide sales channels. Nik Software will continue to independently develop and support its Nik-branded software products to its own worldwide customer base. The agreement builds upon Nik's existing collaborative relationship with Nikon, which produced and distributed proprietary versions of Nik's Nik Color Efex Pro plug-ins for use in Nikon Capture software.

“This cooperative agreement enables both Nikon and Nik to fulfill their common commitment to continuously develop advanced products and technology for the booming digital-photography market,” says Michael J. Slater, president and CEO of Nik Software. “We look forward to working with Nikon to build a strong digital imaging software business by leveraging both our companies' proprietary technologies and photo-imaging know-how.”

In early February, the company announced that it changed its name from Nik Multimedia to Nik Software, Inc. and also unveiled its new corporate identity–keeping the familiar “Nik” but replacing “Multimedia” with “Software” in order “to better represent the company's focus on software development for the digital-imaging market.”

“Nik Software's new name and corporate identity marks a significant milestone for the company following the 10-year anniversary of its establishment,” says Slater. “These changes have been made to underscore the company's dedication to developing software products and technologies for serious amateur and professional photographers involved in the fast-growing digital photography market.”
