Durst Phototechnik AG has announced the latest in a series of upgrades to its Rho 205 wide-format flatbed UV inkjet printer. The new upgrade, called Smart Speed, is a combination of hardware and software improvements that increases the output speed of the Rho 205 by 30 percent with no loss of image quality, Durst reports.

Specifically, the upgrade includes the development of new image-processing software and a new encoder, which serves to provide an increase in media-transport speed. The 30 percent speed increase is achieved with Rho 205s configured with eight or 16 heads, and occurs across all print quality settings. A Rho 205/16 set at Level 1, says Durst, prints up to 700 sq ft/hr at full width.

In the past year, Durst also has added to the Rho: white ink overprint and underprint, special-effect varnish, spot color, and 16 heads.

Smart Speed is available immediately on all new Rho 205s, and can be added to Rho 205s already “in the field” as an option beginning in March. Cost to upgrade (US only): $18,500.
