A Fish Story

SkinzWraps uses its Epson GS6000 for church aquarium project.

The Dallas-based division of vehicle-wrap and wall-covering specialists SkinzWraps was recently tapped to produce a rapid-turnaround project for the Inspiring Body of Christ Church (IBOC), a mega-church in the Dallas area. The church had a time-sensitive project involving a display area of massive arches around a custom, acrylic aquarium measuring 16 x 72-feet long. The arches served as entry ways into the IBOC sanctuary. IBOC’s pastor felt that having a themed mural designed, printed, and installed on the “white space” of the arches would make the aquarium complete.

“The client came to us in the 11th hour because it knew that if anyone could pull this project off successfully in a week (several shops had already failed), that SkinzWraps would have the best chance,” says Peter Salaverry, CEO of SkinzWraps.
Once the deal between the print provider and the church was completed, the work began. SkinzWraps designed the 4.8-gigabyte image featuring Biblical graphics in 18 hours using Adobe Creative Suite 3, and then received approval from the client. Printing for the mural began the following day and continued over the weekend until early Monday morning.

SkinzWraps took 120 hours to print the 17-panel job, each panel measuring 52-inches wide x 16 feet in length. The company used its Epson GS6000 wide-format printer with GS6000 Epson inks and Colorburst RIP to image onto DreamScape WallWrap Caviar, a textured, self-adhesive wallcovering.

After printing was completed, the SkinzWraps installation team began the install. “We always do our own installations—outsourcing is not part of our core business model, and for a project like this, such an approach would have been disastrous,” explains Salaverry. Installation was finished on the day after printing, and breakdown of scaffolding was completed the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. As part of the terms of the successful delivery, the CEO and CFO of SkinzWraps are allowed to swim in the aquarium with the fishes.
