Mimaki Shows New JF-1631

Owners can choose between 4-color x 2, 7-color, or 8-color inksets.

Mimaki debuted its new 5 x 10-ft UV-curable flatbed printer-the JF-1631-at SGIA. An early “demo version” of this printer-then labeled the IPF-1326-was previewed earlier this year at ISA, but the machine has undergone several changes since then.

The printer, equipped with Xaar Toshiba printheads, utilizes Mimaki UV-curable inks. Its 8-color inks (CMYKcm+W) now include the addition of a new clear ink in the eighth color slot. Owners can choose between several inksets: 4-color x 2, 7-color, or 8-color. The JF-1631 enables overlay printing with white or clear ink; the clear ink acts like a varnish, Mimaki reports, providing the printed surface with a similar finish.

Accommodating media up to 2-in. thick, the JF-1631 boasts a top speed of 200 sq ft/hr at 600-dpi resolution in 4 x 2 color mode; speeds for photographic image quality reach 72 sq ft/hr in 1200-dpi mode.

The printer also features a 4-zoned vacuum bed that holds the media securely in place to ensure perfect registration. In addition, it offers a laser sensor to prevent head scratches. Also available are the Raster Link Pro II RIP, Mimaki Profile Master profiling software for the JF series, and a starter inkset of either 4-color x 2 or 7-color + clear.

Price: $133,000, without the inkset or RIP. The 5 x 10-ft JF-1631 will ship in January 2007; a smaller version of this machine-the 5 x 5-ft JF-1610 (not shown at SGIA)-will ship in early spring 2007, says the company.
