Microsoft plans to offer native support for digital-camera RAW images in the next major version of Windows–Longhorn. Longhorn, due out in late 2006/early 2007,will support RAW and will also provide an application programming interface (API) that enables software vendors to control RAW conversion in their applications.

In the meantime, look for the release of Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP (available as a free download). This software will allow users to view thumbnails, display metadata, preview, and print Canon and Nikon RAW files directly from Windows Explorer in XP. These features, as well as organizing, editing, and converting capabilities, will be part of a future version of Digital Image Suite.

In addition, Microsoft is developing a certification program for third-party RAW image codecs to ensure consistency for RAW users.

“By working with industry leaders to extend support for RAW in Windows, we are removing the obstacles for consumer use of RAW and enabling a seamless platform for the next era of digital imaging innovation,” says Amir Majidimehr, vice president of Windows Ditial Media.
