LexJet, the Sarasota, FL-based graphic-arts supplier, has jumped into the replacement-ink aftermarket, and is now offering its own dye-based inks–for the Hewlett-Packard Designjet 5000 and 5500 printers.

Packaged in refurbished HP cartridges, the inks are guaranteed to be “hot swappable” with HP inks”?requiring no line purging or change in ICC profiles. LexJet also warrants that the inks will not interfere with any HP warranty (if any HP printer problem is tracked back to LexJet inks, LexJet will pay for the repair). The LexJet dye inks are compatible with any media that is compatible with HP 5000 and 5500 dye inks, the company reports.

“For many reasons, we have elected not to compete with OEM inks for more than 10 years,” says Camillia Mankovich, LexJet's marketing director. With more than 5000 customers with HP printers, however, the company decided to come up with an ink solution that would focus on the HP brand. “We wanted to offer a solution tailored to our customer base,” says Mankovich. “We waited until the technology and the research reached a point in development that would ensure a quality product; in short, we want the product to be perfect before we released it. We can now confidently offer a viable alternative ink solution to our customers who are using HP 5000/5500 printing technology.”

Nor will dye inks be an endstop for LexJet. The company says it will introduce its own solvent inks and media at the upcoming ISA show (we'll report on these in a future issue). Also in the offing, says Mankovich: “UV-curable media; more UV-curable printers; and digital-proofing equipment. In addition, we will be focusing more on Onyx software.”
