HP has agreed to acquire Exstream Software, a privately held provider of software designed to streamline the creation and delivery of personalized documents and other communication materials. Upon completion of the acquisition, Exstream will be integrated into the Web Services and Software business unit within the Imaging and Printing Group (IPG) of HP.

Based in Lexington, Kentucky, Exstream has 300 employees. Its product line includes three variable-data offerings: Dialogue, an enterprise document-automation software suite; Dialogue Live, an interactive document-automation solution; and AFP Studio, a suite of Advanced Function Presentation (AFP) productivity solutions for managing AFP print streams.

The acquisition of Exstream, HP reports, is expected to allow it to address a broader set of customers and to lead in variable data publishing, an integral part of HP’s enterprise printing strategy.

“Businesses – whether a bank, healthcare provider or utility company – need to communicate relevant, personalized information to their customers through a broad range of channels,” says David Murphy, senior vice president, Web Services and Software Business, IPG, HP. “We expect that the acquisition of Exstream will allow HP to address a broader set of customers and be a strong leader in the fast-growing document automation market.”
