Epson America has matched up its Stylus Pro 4000 printer with a custom-designed PostScript Level 3 RIP from ColorBurst and Epson's fastest Ethernet card to produce the Stylus Pro 4000 Professional Edition printer.

The ColorBurst software RIP includes a full Pantone color library–eliminating the need to convert Pantone spot colors to process equivalents–and is SWOP-certified (when printing with the included SWOP Printing Environment on Epson Premium Semimatte Photo Paper 250 and Epson Proofing Paper Commercial Semimatte). Other features include an easy-to-use RIP server interface and job manager, direct file printing capabilities with hot-folder technology, and the ability to automatically correct out-of-spec color. Also included are separate input ICC profiles for RGB, CMYK and grayscale images.

“While the Epson Stylus Pro 4000 Professional Edition is ideal for a variety of creative applications, this robust engine is especially suited to handle demanding proofing jobs,” says Mark Radonga, group product manager for Epson's Pro Graphics division. “Furthermore, because the color becomes stable through the entire approval process once the proof is pulled, and the solution is priced affordably so that it can be used throughout the entire workflow, this marks the first step in making remote proofing a reality.”

The 7-color (CMYcmb plus one of two other blacks) Professional Edition printer uses Epson's pigment-based UltraChrome Ink and can print at 2880 x 1440 dpi. Images can be printed on virtually any media type up to 1.5mm thick and up to 17-in. wide using rolls or cut sheets. The printer boasts an internal 10/100 BaseT Ethernet card.

Estimated street price: $2195. An optional printer stand is available for $399. (Epson: www.epson.com)
