Other problems reported with first-generation UV-curable inks are a dull, not glossy, look and the appearance of “topographical banding”–lawn-mower-like tracks that can appear in dark solids when the print is viewed from a certain angle. The higher the speed at which the printer is run, the more this phenomenon tends to occur. What's causing topographic bands to appear is the surface texture of the UV-curing ink. Ink that's curing only on the surface is creating very small peaks and valleys between the lines or dots on the print. Applying a clearcoat to the output graphic can make the problem disappear.
