CGS Publishing Technologies International released version 4.4 of their modular ORIS Works workflow-automation system that prepress firms and publishers can use to prepare files for print. The hot-folder-based system now supports industry-standard PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3 files, as well as ICC color management, and job tickets.

ORIS Works runs under Windows 2000 Server and is used by prepress firms and publishers to prepare files for print. Commercial printers use it as a front-end for CTP (computer-to-plate) output. Customers can adopt only the components needed to automate their prepress systems.

In addition to being able to import PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3 files, Oris Works 4.4 can now convert and output jobs to PDF/X, preserving the correct output intent and other document attributes. The ICC color-management colors makes it possible to substitute a different output intent for the one that may have been furnished with the embedded profile. Color-management controls are available for all outputs supported by Oris Works. Other changes include full spot-color support in composite PostScript and PDF and improvements in web-based reporting and the ability to balance jobs on multiple output devices.

With Oris Works' new optional database-driven job ticket system, managers can specify multiple job parameters, including page count, color placement, and imposition and track the progress of each job component. According to CGS president Andreas Kaemmerer, the job-ticket system represents the company's first step toward incorporating the Job Definition Format (JDF) specification within the ORIS product line.
