A New Direction in Art

Kerry McFall's digital art is different than most. Her quilted art comprises images sourced from her original watercolor paintings combined with GIS maps. The hybrid image is printed onto fabric with a wide-format printer, and then embellished by hand.

This salmon project, titled Mariner's Compass, began as a watercolor of a Coho salmon and another of the mariner's compass quilt design. McFall, based in Corvallis, OR, added a GIS image of the Columbia River estuary, where the salmon lives. She often prints the smaller images herself directly onto backed fabric using her Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 960c. For larger images, however, she works with photographer/printer Thomas Bach of PhotoBach Digital Studio (www.photobach.com) who prints McFall's images onto canvas or 3P fabric using an Epson Stylus Pro 9600 with UltraChrome inks.
