Stora Enso Digital Solutions Formed

Stora Enso and Xeikon International have established Stora Enso Digital Solutions, a joint venture that will undertake the sales, service, and development of a turnkey on-demand disc-packaging solution.

Titled “Stora Enso DBS Powered by Xeikon,” the packaging solution is an automated on-demand production line that covers the entire process of printing, die cutting and assembling, and filling DBS packs”?the Discbox Slider paperboard packaging for CDs and DVDs developed by Stora Enso. The solution comprises a Xeikon 5000 digital printing press, DBS converting machine, and DBS Pac Master packaging machine.

“Today, there is a growing demand for short production runs in the disc-production business because of the fragmented nature of the market,” says Ari Lehikoinen, managing director of Stora Enso Digital Solutions. “For example, a first run can be for 1000 pieces, with the subsequent runs for just 300 to 500 pieces.”

“Digital printing workflow is quick and efficient compared with traditional printing methods,” he continues. “Online control of the whole production line enables variable data, quick changeovers, and personalization of the disc packs. This meets the demands of the market, and opens up new possibilities for the use of discs in promotions, corporate communications, and direct marketing as well.”

The solution is primarily being targeted at music, software, movie, and game industries as an alternative to plastic packaging. The DBS is suitable for one or two discs, plus booklet; it is 30% slimmer and 50% lighter than a standard plastic jewel box, reports Stora Enso Digital Solutions.
