Screen, which owns Inca Digital Printing, introduced its new Truepress machines at SGIA: the Truepress Jet2500UV and the Truepress Jet650UV. Both are UV-curable printers that offer grayscale capability, and utilize Screen flexible UV inks.

The Truepress Jet2500UV (which had been previewed at the FESPA show earlier this year) is a 98.4-in.-wide hybrid flatbed/roll-to-roll printer that boasts speeds up to 726 sq ft/hr and accommodates rigid and rollfed media up to 1.96-in. thick. The printer’s piezo drop-on-demand printheads produce eight levels of grayscale with drop sizes from 6 to 42 pl and produce images with precise dot registration, sharp text, and a 1500-dpi maximum resolution.

“The introduction of the Truepress Jet2500UV extends Screen’s presence beyond on-demand and transactional printing into the wide-format display graphics and sign-printing markets,” says Mike Fox, president of Screen USA. “It provides a high-performance tool for a wide range of applications.”

Screen’s flexible UV inks are available in the standard 4-color (CMYK) inkset. The optional 6-color (CMYKcm) inkset produces a smoother appearance in mid-tones and highlights. Ink tank capacity is 5 l/color to accommodate long print runs. (Note: The company indicates that options for white ink and varnish will soon be available.)

The Jet2500UV offers print modes from 300 to 1500 dpi. In addition, the Truepress Jet2500UV affords minimal setup time and is compatible with poster board, vinyl sheets, banners, wallpaper, textiles and other types of coated and uncoated media. The printer comes standard with an automatic head-cleaning function, a linear motor for high-precision, a vacuum belt to hold media in place, and Wasatch RIP Screen edition. Users may add optional additional tables.

List price: $345,000.

Screen also presented its Truepress Jet650UV, designed for the industrial market. The 25.3 x 23.3-in. flatbed UV-curable printer images directly onto rigid or flexible substrates up to 1.9-in. thick, including coated and uncoated paper, plastics, textiles, wood, glass, and ceramic tiles.

The Jet650UV utilizes up to eight modules and 32 printheads, and the company reports that the linear motion drive of its printheads enables the machine to deliver high productivity for industrial use as well as print speeds up to 201 sq in./min or 84 sq ft/hr. With the near-photographic resolution of 2400 x 2400 dpi, the Jet650UV images full-color, high-precision grayscale prints.

Equipped with 1-l per module ink tank capacity, the Truepress Jet650UV comes standard with CMYK inks; a white-ink unit is an option.

With adjustable pins and a vacuum bed for accurate media placement, the onboard CCD camera reads register marks and automatically adjusts the alignment of the printing material. Microscopic angle adjustment of the print material maintains high precision even when printing on both sides of transparent media or inkjet printing over screen printing.

Built-in maintenance functions include misfire check and non-contact head wiping; another prevents heat from the UV-light source from causing distortion of resin-coated paper.

Estimated price: $700,000; shipping in 2008.
