Roland Founder Kakehashi Passes

Remembering a pioneer in electronics.

Ikutaro Kakehashi has died of heart failure at age 87, according to an announcement by ATV, which he founded in 2013. Kakehashi was the founder of a number of enterprises in the electronic music industry, from Kakehashi Clock Shop in 1947 at the age of 16 to Roland in 1972. He ran the company for the next 40 years, earning recognition from the Berklee College of Music, the Chinese Central Conservatory of Music, the Hollywood RockWalk, and more.

Roland DG was established as a subsidiary in 1981 to manufacture “computerized music peripherals,” according to the company’s website. It introduced its first pen plotter, the DXY-100, a year later; the PNC-1000 cutting plotter followed in 1988.

Kakehashi was remembered at a family-only funeral earlier this week.
