WHEN IT COMES TO delivering a message, the most tried and true form of advertising, out-of-home (OOH), is the standout winner. It has such a strong and tangible effect on society that it actually drives viewers to complete further research on the company, the product, or the pitch. According to Nielson, nearly five in 10 US residents ages 18 or older have used an online search engine to look up information after seeing an OOH advertisement. In fact, online activations including search, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram generated by OOH garnered nearly four times the amount of online activity compared to its relative ad spend.

This means the wildly creative and captivating advertisements you see on billboards while driving down the highway, on buildings when strolling through downtown, and on vehicles as they drive past, have a direct correlation to both brick-and-mortar and online sales. The OBIE Awards recognize the excellence of the OOH industry, as one of the older and most prestigious honors for creative excellence in advertising. In fact, the “Obie” name is derived from the ancient Egyptian Obelisk, a massive stone structure that was used to publicize laws and treaties thousands of years ago, which historians consider to be one of the first forms of OOH advertising. In 2020, they had more than 650 submissions for the awards; we picked 20 of our favorites to inspire you.
