InteliCoat Celebrates 10 Years of Magic

With new materials to boost the revenues of owners of wide-format inkjets

InteliCoat Technologies, which has a legacy of more than 70 years of designing and engineering coatings, recently celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the Magic? brand of wide-format inkjet media. The brand was officially registered on April 5, 1993.

Over the past decade, the developers of Magic media have helped stimulate the market for large-format graphics by producing a multitude of materials with which early adopters of electrostatic and wide-format inkjet printers could create sellable, new products of their own.

As demand for large-format display graphics grew, many Magic media products were developed to improve turnaround times or provide lower-cost options for short-term graphics. The newest additions to the Magic product line include products that make it easier to produce higher volumes of photorealistic graphics in shorter periods of time, hang and reposition posters, create on-demand floor graphics, and sell customized wallcoverings. Other new products can help graphics producers save time and materials in mounting prints and using solvent-system inkjets for more than just outdoor signs.

Universal Resin-Coated Photobase (DMPDQU): In order to handle higher-volume jobs or meet expectations for faster turnaround times, many graphics producers rely on today's new generation of faster-throughput inkjet printers. But in a production environment, a fast-throughput printer is worthless if the prints must be spread around the shop to dry before they can be laminated. InteliCoat's Magic line now includes an 8-mil universal photobase paper that combines the image-quality advantages of a true resin-coated photo paper with the instant-dry benefits provided by the microporous coating developed to make inkjet media suitable for use with many makes of models of wide-format inkjet printers that use water-based inks.

Adhesive-Backed Polypropylene for Posters (LOTAK-7): The low-tack repositionable adhesive on Magic LOTAK-7 polypropylene media makes it easy to mount and remove printed graphics from a variety of smooth, flat surfaces. The versatile 9-mil media is suitable for a variety of short-run, short-term promotions, including vehicle decals such as bumper stickers for local political candidates. The media is compatible with most popular models of wide-format inkjets, whether they use water-based, oil-based, or solvent-based inks.

Mural Pro: This 54-in. wide, latex-based wallcovering material is suitable for use in residential, hospitality, commercial, and retail-design projects. After an image is selected and formatted, Mural Pro can be printed in panels on wide-format thermal inkjet printers that use pigmented, water-based inks (e.g. Encad NovaJets, ColorSpan DisplayMakers, Hewlett-Packard Designjet 5000UVs). The printed graphics can then be applied to interior walls using standard wallpaper pastes. The Mural Pro product meets ASTM 798 standards for commercial wallcoverings. According to InteliCoat's Ed McCarron, these standards not only mean the material meets requirements for flame-retardancy, but also that it can be subjected to a number of staining agents and cleaning cycles without demonstrating any visible changes.

Short-Run Floor Graphics: Floor graphics are increasingly popular in national brand-marketing and P-O-P campaigns in discount and grocery chains, but they can also be used in other ways, such as trade-show directional signage or environmental graphics for museum exhibits. InteliCoat's new two-component Magic? floor-graphic system makes it possible to create short runs of colorful, locally customized, and/or photorealistic floor graphics on aqueous-system thermal and piezo inkjets. The graphics are first printed on an inkjet-receptive adhesive-backed vinyl, then finished with Magic's compatible 4-mil clear or 6.4-mil textured slip-resistant vinyl overlaminate. The adhesive-backed vinyl is designed for use on a variety of commercial floor surfaces. The matching overlaminate meets industry standards for non-slip performance.

Inkjet-Printable Laminating Film: InteliCoat's PRINTLAM product is a printable polyester laminate with an adhesive that is also an image-receptive coating. Graphics are simply printed on reverse onto Printlam, then mounted on a rigid substrate. It reduces the additional time and materials involved in applying adhesives and laminating films to a graphic printed on traditional photobase media and then mounting it to the board. InteliCoat has enhanced Printlam to deliver better image quality and adhesion to popular mounting substrates such as Sintra? and Fome-Cor?.

Multiple Materials for Solvent-Ink-System Printers: Over the past year, Mimaki, Mutoh, DGI, and Oce have all introduced solvent-system inkjet printers priced to entice more small- to mid-sized sign companies to add wide-format digital printing services. Once they do, InteliCoat's eight new Magic? media for inkjet printers that use solvent-based inks can help sign companies expand their product offerings. The substrates, available in 36- to 60-in. widths, include:

an outdoor/indoor, tear-resistant Tyvek? banner media for applications that need to last about six months;

a polypropylene banner material with an ultra-smooth printing surface for banners or backlits used for up to a month outdoors or a year indoors;

a 6-mil indoor/outdoor banner fabric for soft signs and flags;

a 14-mil scrim vinyl banner material;

a polyester backlit film;

a midweight latex-saturated indoor/outdoor poster media and a smooth surface and luster finish;

a heavyweight latex-saturated, wet-strength substrate for digital wallcoverings;

a tear-resistant, latex-saturated and nylon-reinforced indoor banner/outdoor poster media for short-term promotions.

According to InteliCoat's Ed McCarron, some of the products in the solvent inkjet line, such as the polypropylene, Tyvek, and backlit films, will work on systems that use mild-solvent inks.

At InteliCoat's Magic website, visitors can find more details about each product, as well as Product Application Guides containing information of the physical properties of the media, how to achieve optimum printing results, and recommendations for various finishing processes.
The website also contains ICC profiles for selected combinations of RIPs, inks, printers, and Magic inkjet media. Website visitors can also request free sample rolls. (InteliCoat Technologies:
