Canon Adds 15.1-Mpxl EOS-50D

New camera features four-level noise-reduction, Digic 4 processor and more.

Canon has introduced the EOS 50D digital SLR, a 15.1-Mpxl camera with 14-bit conversion for smooth color tones and gradations. The camera also features a maximum ISO rating of 12800 and a four-level noise-reduction function, which allows users to shoot subjects in very low light or in motion.

The camera boasts Canon’s Digic 4 image processor, which provides a capture rate of 6.3 frames per second for up to 90 JPEGs with UDMA CF cards or 60 JPEGs or 16 raw images using standard CF cards. The camera also has nine cross-type sensors at f-stops of f/5.6 or faster for fast and more accurate focusing. Another diagonally mounted cross-type sensor allows the user to photograph in dim lighting conditions.

Additionally, the 50D features enhanced live-view shooting with live face-detection mode, a 3-in. smudge-resistant LCD monitor, a lens peripheral illumination correction setting to even out brightness across the image, and an updated EOS cleaning system for better dust-resistance. The camera’s quick control screen allows for settings like flash, exposure compensation, and image quality to be accessible through a single screen interface.

The 50D also includes a HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) output device that enables high-definition display of photographs on an HDTV with HDMI ports. The DSLR is compatible with more than 60 Canon EF/EF-S lenses and most EOS system accessories. Price of the EOS-50D: $1399; with the EF 28-135mm f/2.5-5.6 IS USM zoom lens, $1599.
