RIT Offers Industrial Courses for Color Scientists

The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is offering a series of industrial courses for the color-imaging community this summer. The hands-on workshops will be held at the Munsell Color Science Laboratory (MCSL), which is part of RIT's Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science.

Two of the courses offered on June 3 and 4 are “Principles of Color Technology” and “Device Profiles for Color Management.” In the “Principles” session, color scientists Roy Berns and Mark Fairchild, MCSL director, will introduce students to basic colorimetry used in applications such as coatings, textiles, automobiles, plastics, and image reproduction. Participants will learn about the derivation of the CIE system of tristimulus values, color spaces, and color difference equations such as CIE94 and CMC. The course will also describe instrumentation for colorimetry and the evaluation of measurement accuracy. In the “Device Profiles” course, color scientist Mitchell Rosen will help participants focus techniques for incorporating device characterization into ICC-compatible device profiles in “Device Profiles for Color Management.” Participants will learn about different profiling techniques and prepare and encode characterization data generated from methods ranging from direct measurement to analytical modeling.

On June 5 and 6 advanced and specialized classes will include “Vision and Psychophysics,” “Instrumental-Based Color Matching,” “Color Appearance: CIECAM02 and Beyond,” “Optimization Techniques for Color Reproduction,” and Halftone Theory and Practice.” For more detailed course descriptions visit RIT's website.

The Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science is part of RIT's College of Science. In addition to bachelor's and master's degrees, the college offers the nation's only Ph.D. in imaging science. The center's research and teaching labs are dedicated to electronic imaging, digital image processing, remote sensing, medical imaging, color science, optics and chemical imaging.
