A production manager of a wide-format print shop in Singapore received a one-year jail sentence on Thursday after he used company equipment to run his own freelance business, Channel News Asia reports.
Mike Song, 56, began printing banners and other materials for personal clients using company resources in November of 2015, eventually setting up his own shop. He made more than $57,000 before a co-worker reported him to management in February of 2020.
He pleaded guilty to two charges of criminal breach of trust as an employee, with another four charges taken into consideration.
The article says that Song started his side hustle after feeling the company was not giving him sufficient opportunities for advancement. He was often physically absent from work during office hours and would return to work late at night. In 2017 and 2018 alone, he printed materials using his employer’s resources on 70 occasions.
