Super Bowl LIII Boombox

Print Shop: GCI
Location: Atlanta
Tools and Supplies: Agfa Duratex Black Back Mesh, PVC, EFI Vutek GS5000r, EFI Vutek GS3250LX Pro

When the Super Bowl comes to your city, there’s no denying the big game is the main attraction. (If your team didn’t make it, there’s always the halftime show!) But host cities are sure to turn the sporting event into a week-plus-long party with festivities for locals and visiting football fans alike. For Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta, the fun spanned nine days leading up to the game, complete with an NFL interactive theme park, free-to-the-public fan village, wine and food events, parties, concerts, and more.

Super Bowl Live, the Atlanta Super Bowl Host Committee’s fan village in downtown’s Centennial Olympic Park, hosted a variety of free concerts and family-friendly activities the week leading up to the game, including a virtual reality driving experience, lounges where NFL players made appearances, a 35-foot-tall interactive Lombardi Trophy, biergarten with a view of downtown, and gigantic boombox with sets from Atlanta iHeartMedia stations.

Kreate, a live event production company, tapped GCI, a local wide-format print shop, to bring the giant iHeartRadio Boombox Stage sponsored by Orangetheory Fitness from concept to fruition – in just three days. GCI engineered a freestanding, grommeted graphic covering 3200 square feet with no backing or stiffeners; the shop used PVC to add dimension to the mesh material and designed the boombox to minimize seams and wrinkles. Festivalgoers enjoyed a one-of-a-kind photo op as they bobbed their heads to beats from some of their favorite local stations’ on-air personalities.

Meet all of the 2019 Best of Wide Format Award winners.
