To help build anticipation for the latest installment of the X-Men film saga, 20th Century Fox worked with Fresno, California-based Big3D (big3d.com) to give this poster for X-Men Origins: Wolverine a lenticular treatment.
The 27 x 40-inch poster was designed for showcase presentation in backlit lightboxes in theater lobbies and outdoor displays throughout the US. The poster design features a closeup of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine character’s face rendered in lifelike lenticular 3D with his fist in the bottom portion of the frame. As the poster is viewed, Wolverine’s iconic claws animate, jutting up from the fist’s knuckles, then retracting. The claw animation continues to repeat as the viewer passes by.
Project management and initial artwork development were executed by Drissi Creative Services of Hollywood. Big3D was retained to do the 3D and animation lenticular-effects processing and the lenticular printing. Once artwork had been provided, interlacing was done with SuperFlip!, followed by a proofing stage and then final output with Big3D’s Océ LightJet 5000Rs printer onto Kodak Endura Trans. Big3D produced 250 posters for major market placements in
theater lobbies across the country.
A 25-person shop, Big3D uses its photo printer and litho presses to create jobs for well-known clients such as Warner Bros., Disney, Apple, the US Department of Defense, and others. It now produces single panel sizes as large as 5 x 10 feet.
