Nikon's Small World"?After All

Founded 30 years ago as a way to fuse the art of photography and
science, Nikon's Small World Photomicrography Competition has
attracted entries from across the globe–Estonia to Australia and
Edison, NJ to Cheney, WA. And now there is a touring exhibit of lasts
year's winning images. Enjoy this art under the microscope:

— Until December 31, 2004 – Rochester Institute of Technology,
Rochester, NY.

— Until December 14, 2004 – Museum of Science and Industry,
Tampa, FL.

— Until December 5, 2004 – The Science Place, Dallas, TX.

— December 29 to January 31, 2005 – John Conner Museum at Texas
A&M University, Kingsville, TX.

For the annual contest, the photomicrographic images must be taken
using a light microscope, but use of Nikon equipment is not required.
Any type of specimen and all techniques of light microscopy are
acceptable. The website also has a calendar of winning images
available for purchase.

The above image by Loes Modderman of Science Art, Nijmegen, The
Netherlands, is crystallized caustic soda (cleaning agent), Glauber's
salt, (multi-purpose chemical), and D76 (a photochemical). Magnified
40x under polarized light. It was the 20th place winner in the 2003
contest. (Nikon Microscopy U: www.microscopyu.com)
