The Graphic Communication Institute at Cal Poly (GrCI) has proposed development of a new industry standard entitled Specifications for the Application of Image Displays (SAID). The goal of the SAID project is to develop a new industry standard for evaluating computer displays, video cards, and software used in the reproduction of color-accurate images (aka “soft proofing”). SAID aims to provide an objective, measurable methodology to assess the performance and proper application of display-based proofing equipment and methods.
“Current methods of display certification rely upon subjective visual evaluations and imprecise data built upon a 30 year-old color measurement system that is widely regarded as inadequate,” says Hal Hinderliter, GrCI's director. “By basing the SAID standard on the latest developments in color science, we can leverage the certainty of objective color measurements to provide traceability for our computer display evaluations.”

“Manufacturers are beginning to introduce wide-gamut displays, 10-bit video processing, and other new technologies that are not supported by current proofing workflows,” Hinderliter continues. “GrCI's most important objective will be to create a standard that can be extended in order for improved hardware and software to be utilized; to 'future-proof' the practice of display-based color evaluation.”
A panel of distinguished industry experts and color scientists is being assembled to steer the course of this research project; input from the vendor community will also be encouraged through a board of industry advisers.
