New from Gilman Brothers are two environmentally responsible foamboards with biodegradable polystyrene centers-Insite Biodegradable and Duraplast Biodegradable. This new foam center, using 15% recycled content, is formulated with bio resins, which cause the discarded foamboard to degrade in landfills or commercial composters once it is exposed to a bacteria-rich environment. After one to five years of decomposition, only biomass compost remains, reports the company. The biodegradable products are virtually identical to the company's standard Reveal foam center and perform the same.
Insite Biodegradable is a standard, paper-faced foamboard with the biodegradable rigid foam center. The paper liners are formulated from wood products certified by the Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI). Available in 3/16-in. thickness; standard sheets range from 24 x 36 to 60 x 120 in.
Duraplast Biodegradable comprises a polystyrene center with waterproof polystyrene liners and is 100% biodegradable. Moisture-proof and highly warp resistant, it is categorized as PS6, which is compatible with most municipal, commercial, and industrial programs. The 3/16-in. foamboard is available in standard sizes from 40 x 60 to 48 x 96 in.
