Colter & Peterson (booth 405) is placing an emphasis on new equipment this year at PRINT 19. Two of the three paper cutters that will be demonstrated October 3-5 at McCormick Place in Chicago include PRISM® and SABER®, two of the most popular brand lines in the industry.
A 45-inch SABER S115 and 30-inch PRISM P80 will command attention in the booth. So will the new Challenge 305 full-cut clamp control system, a robust machine that company President Bruce Peterson believes will attract its share of show visitors.
“We have something for every type of shop and there is demand for a machine like our Challenge paper cutter,” informed Peterson. “This is the kind of paper cutter that is really good for shops with workers who have more than one job responsibility, or employees who are shy on experience. Colter & Peterson’s new SABER and PRISM paper cutters will be demonstrated with Microcut® electronics, which is a standard package. Having the newest technology available helps printers raise productivity levels, in some cases 50 percent or more.
Combined with each paper cutter’s penchant for high speed, accuracy within 1/64th of an inch, automatic knife setting, and having the ability to cut a variety of substrates and thicknesses besides paper, PRISM and SABER customers are running more jobs while saving time and money.
“The SABER has always been a productive machine and our operators love it,” says Lantz Gleisner, director of print operations at The YGS Group in York, Pennsylvania. In addition to his 45-inch SABER X-15, he also uses a 36-inch PRISM cutter in his conventional and digital shop.
“The SABER does a real nice job with cover type stocks up to 16 pt. It’s also a heavier machine and I like the high accuracy. For the value and my prior experience with it, it is a very good cutter. It’s a workhorse and I expect it to last for many years.”
Ash Abbott at MPress in New Orleans is having similar success with his SABER paper cutter. Like Gleisner, he ran Polar paper cutters for 12 years before making the switch to SABER nearly six months ago. His 54-inch X-15 is a great fit for the quick, 12-hour turnaround short and medium jobs that make the cash register ring.
“C&P has been our go-to guillotine cutting equipment dealer since Hurricane Katrina. Their past performance factored into my decision to buy the new SABER from them,” he remarked. “The full touchscreen is 15-inches and gives our operators the capability to see everything. We use it for all the small jobs because of the false clamp size. Different cuts can have different clamp pressures, and we have learned how to program those varying pressures with the cuts into the Microcut system.”
Size does matter with these paper cutters. The stack lifts on SABER gives customers the option to trim as much as five inches of material at one time. Tom Slade of Slade Print in Evansville, Indiana relishes flexibility. The 31-inch PRISM he purchased earlier this year trims his conventional work and is handling a greater amount of digital jobs. He also uses the PRISM to cut work for a growing signage division.
“The PRISM is linked to run work from our HP Indigo 5500 6 or 7-color press, and a Ricoh 7210, which does 4-color and specialty colors and a varnish look treatment. Combined with some Xerox equipment, we’ve gained efficiencies since adding this paper cutter,” Slade said. “It’s very smooth, robust, and just a good, solid machine. In this day and age, durability and stability are things you look for. I think it was a good investment for us. It is user-friendly and presents a good image when customers visit and see it.”
