Ceiling Graphic Masterpiece Takes over Train Station

It took a village to deliver the unforgettable experience that architects in Delft, The Netherlands, dreamed of as they designed a 230 x 360-foot vaulted ceiling for the town’s new train station. Print provider MakeCover worked with Geerdes Design, Mecanoo architects, and virtual reality and game designer Candy Games to visualize and produce a series of graphics based on historical maps of the area from the 1870s. The image, printed on an HP Latex printer onto 3M IJ70-114 film with 3M 8520 laminate, comes together on both sides of nearly 2000 aluminum slats, each extending roughly 8 inches from the ceiling. And the team left no detail unpolished; even the map’s due-north orientation is accurate.
