New from Xerox are its 8365 and 8390 wide-format inkjet printers, designed specifically for outdoor graphics. Similar to the 8265/8290 printers released at Graph Expo 2007, these printers share many of the same features, including 6- and 2×4-color inksets, print speeds for typical production quality from 162 to 215 sq ft/hr, dynamic variable-dot imaging and intelligent interweaving to deliver sharp images with smooth color transitions and less banding, and printing on a variety of uncoated media such as adhesive film and banner materials.

However, unlike the 8265 and 8290 that use an eco-solvent inkset and don't require ventilation, these new printers utilize mild-solvent inks that do require ventilation, so the company has included an air-purification system with the machines-the Quattro Pro Pure Air System. The 8200-series printers feature a top 1440-dpi printing resolution, while the 8300 models max out at 720 dpi. Additionally, the 8365/8390's inks extend the outdoor lifespan of the graphics to 4 yr as compared to the 8265/8290's 3-yr lifespan.

Resolutions for the 8365 and 8390 range from 360 x 360 dpi to 720 x 720 dpi, and print speeds are listed as 6-color and 2×4-color, with the latter coming in at approximately twice the 6-color speed. Depending on the number of passes, 6-color 360 x 360-dpi printing ranges from 32 to 237 sq ft/hr with 2×4-color speeds of 65 to 452 sq ft/hr. The highest resolution (720 x 720 dpi) produces speeds from 16 to 70 sq ft/hr for 6-color printing and 32 to 140 sq ft/hr for 2×4-color imaging.

The 8365/8390 are equipped with four Epson l663V printheads with 360 nozzles per ink channel. Capable of both CMYKx2 or CMYKcm printing, the heads produce variable dot sizes from 5.4 to 41.5 pl. The Mild-Solvent Ultra inks print graphics that are waterproof, abrasion resistant, and UV-stable. The 440-ml ink cartridges can be replaced while printing.

Other features of the 8365 and 8390 include a motorized media winder/unwinder system, an automated onboard self-maintenance, automatic head-height adjustment for media thickness, and four digitally controlled heating elements. A Xerox Wide Format Color Server Pro RIP or Xerox Wide Format Color Server RIP is optional.

Price without RIP: $33,500 for 8365; $42,900 for 8390.
