Wallcoverings Take over 18th-Century Home

A streamlined workflow process aids Point's wallpaper installation.

Scott Rowell, owner of Point, in Hingham, Massachusetts, is no stranger to the trials of streamlining one’s digital print workflow. His resume includes founder of Mammoth Media and former general manager of its now-parent company, Circle Graphics, experiences which brought him in contact with Caldera, Cyrious, Onyx, EFI Fiery, and HomeGrown workflow systems. Today, SAi Flexi is his primary RIP at Point. But, regardless of the platform used, Rowell says it’s all about starting a project off strong, and it starts with workflow: “If it’s streamlined at the beginning of the workflow, it streamlines the whole print process.”

Rowell, like many PSPs in our industry, says the number-one problem holding up workflow is job approval. “The approval process has always been a for small and large shops,” he says. “Everyone has them for various reasons, but I’ve found if you can ask the questions ‘Who, What, When, Where, and Why’ during the intake process and have a strong workflow, those bottlenecks go away.

“Point is about listening to and understanding our clients and their needs,” Rowell says. “Our philosophy is simple: provide the best possible solution and value. We achieve this through getting to know our clients, teaching them about the process or product, positive vendor and manufacturer relationships, and strong workflow systems.”

And while there are many options in the market tailored to your shop’s specific needs, Rowell prefers a subscription-based platform because “first, there is no obligation. Second, there is no large investment. And third, there are no accessorial charges for updates.”

Point recently completed a project for an 18th-century home in Hingham undergoing a major renovation. The shop was contracted to provide digitally printed wallpaper to be installed throughout the home. The pattern was produced in Flexi and printed on Drytac Retac Textures Canvas via an HP Latex 370 printer.

“The client absolutely loved it,” says Rowell. “And the media allows the homeowner to remove it from the wall with zero problems.”

While Rowell touts having a great workflow system, team, and client-vendor relationship, he also gives credit to the world of wide-format. “This is a great time in the print industry. We have cutting-edge equipment, products, and expanding markets,” he says. “And manufacturers are listening to their customers and providing real solutions.”
