Staples Inc. has added a new revenue stream for its operations by bringing color wide-format in-house. The office-supplies retailer has added wide-format color printers to more than 1250 of its stores across the US, installing HP Designjet 130nr (24 in.) printers in its copy centers, which are located in the company's stores. In addition, Staples has installed HP Designjet 5500uv printers (42 in.) in 16 of its hub locations, which are larger-scale printing and copying facilities that support the copy and print centers,

Behzad Soltani, director of business services for Staples, says that the color printers are in addition to the black-and-white printers the company added about 18 months ago, when it first entered the wide-format market. “We've been investing in that area and continuing to grow that,” he says.

Staples, which opened its first store in 1986, now operates more than 1500 retail stores throughout the US and Canada. The company generated $16.1 billion in sales in 2005.
