Seiko ColorTextiler 64DS Dye-sub Printer

Seiko has jumped back into the wide-format inkjet market with its new 64-in. ColorTextiler 64DS, a dye-sublimation printer carrying an entry-level price point.

Featuring four 256-nozzle Seiko IJ printheads that produce 14-pl drops, this printer images onto transfer paper. The ColorTextiler uses Seiko's new oil-based dye-sub inks; the ink dries immediately and image is heat-set polyester or poly-blend fabrics, as well as materials such as tiles and carpet. Additionally, the oil-based inks provide a wider color gamut on an extensive range of polyester and polyester-blend fabrics

The ColorTextiler 64DS prints at a speed of 88 sq ft/hr in 8-pass true 720 x 720-dpi mode. It reaches a top speed of 176 sq ft.hr in 360 x 360-dpi 4-pass mode, and a mid-range speed of 110 sq ft/hr at 720 x 540-dpi 6-pass mode.

Most commercially available transfer papers and RIP software are compatible with the ColorTextiler 64DS, Seiko reports.

The Seiko name is familiar to the wide-format market. It set up its first US office to sell wide-format inkjet printers in 2003 and then in 2005 signed an OEM agreement in 2005 with HP to jointly develop and market solvent-based wide-format printers intended primarily for the outdoor-graphics printing market; at that time, it stopped producing its line of ColorPainter solvent printers.
