Feeling blue about your latest job’s color results? Seeing green because your competitor has gobbled up all of the print work for one of the city’s biggest retailers—all due to its color-matching prowess? Is your shop in the red as a result of its color do-overs?

If color management has become a major challenge at your company, you might want to take advantage of the 2009 Color Management Conference (printing.org/color), which takes place December 6-8, 2009, at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort in Phoenix.

The annual conference typically draws upon industry professionals of all types—“everyone from those who have not started the journey of color management through experienced adopters of the technology,” the conference reports, “including print providers, digital photographers, graphic designers, publishers, art directors, packaging professionals, prepress managers, press supervisors, production managers, and quality-control managers.”

This year’s conference will include nearly 60 sessions, including:
• Color Management Technology Overview: An overview of terms, definitions, and concepts. Dr. Mark Bohan, Printing Industries of America, and Joe Tuccitto, Flexographic Technical Association.
• Managing Realistic Color Expectations: Managing clients’ expectations throughout the entire process, from design through proofing to final product delivery. Dave Zwang, Zwang & Company.
• Tools for Proper Measurement: Basic overview of the tools that can be used to measure color, including spectrophotometers, densitometers, and colorimeters. Greg Radencic, Printing Industries of America.
• Wide Format Considerations: Printing color on a large scale requires special considerations for optimum color management; discussion will include equipment considerations, productivity, and workflow evaluations. Speaker to be announced.
• Monitor Profiling: The expectations and pitfalls of monitor profiling; applying monitor/soft and inkjet proofing techniques. Derrick Brown and Jack Bingham, Integrated Color Corporation.

Printing Industries of America (PIA) has also announced two keynote presentations for its 11th Annual Color Management conference.

Wayne Sapper and Yehuda Blau-Maur of Manhattan-based King Displays will present Delivering the Color of Broadway, discussing the company’s distinctive clientele, their demanding color needs, unusual requests, and extremely quick turnaround times.
James Martin, president of Alexandria, Virginia-based non-profit Color Management Group (CMG), will deliver Forecasting the Right Colors, explaining the premise behind CMG as an international non-profit association which bi-annually meets to identify and forecast colors that will be used in consumer goods and manufactured products across all industries.

This year’s conference will also feature a special pre-conference session on color management across different printing processes.
