Pentax Corp. and Samsung Electronics have announced that the two companies will jointly develop entry-level and middle-range digital single lens reflex (SLR) cameras, aiming to pool resources and cut costs. Each company plans to market the cameras under its own brand.

Their first joint effort will be a camera based on an existing Pentax model, incorporating some Samsung technology; the camera will be launched in the spring of 2006. A new jointly developed camera would not come until the autumn of 2006, Pentax says.

This alliance falls on the heels of a similar deal between Konica Minolta and Sony, announced in late July.
