Free service for PDF novices promotes the format, allows PDF files to be preflighted and verified



on, a free Internet service for preflighting and processing PDF files, has gone online. Set up by software companies Callas Software and Diron, the project aims to give PDF novices a first-hand look at the advantages and the versatility of the PDF format. From within, PDF files can be preflighted and verified for their suitability for digital printing, offset printing, or for newspapers. Users receive detailed feedback about any possible problems in uploaded PDFs, and they have the option to immediately convert their files to PDF/X-3.

“Quite often, users don't have the heart to deal with PDF issues, just because they don't know how easy this format is to manage,” says Olaf Drummer, managing director of Callas Softare. “With, we want to stress that the Portable Document Format could be very useful even to people and companies not linked to publishing industries.”
