Olympus has debuted the E-520 DSLR, the successor to its E-510. The 10.1-Mxpl camera features Olympus’ TruePic III Image Processor which is designed to produce clear images and reduce graininess in photos shot at higher ISO settings. The camera also features in-body image stabilization with Supersonic Wave Drive technology for blur-free images, on-screen autofocus with Live View to display subjects on its 2.7-in. HyperCrystal II LCD screen, face-detection and shadow-adjustment technology, and perfect-shot preview. Additionally, users can snap pictures at a burst rate of 3.5 frames/sec with resolutions up to 3648 x 2736 pxl in raw or JPEG formats.

The in-body image stabilization feature now offers three modes. IS-1 mode is designed for general shooting and adjusts the sensor on both the X and Y axes to compensate for movement by the photographer so images stay sharp at slow shutter speeds. IS-2 mode allows photographers to capture subjects at high speeds while panning with the moving subject to convey motion. The IS-3 mode allows a photographer to capture speed and pan while holding the camera vertically which can produce an image with the moving subject in sharp focus with a blurred background.

The E-520 also features a PT-E05 underwater housing which allows users to submerge the camera in water up to 130 ft deep. Special underwater scene modes assure that the camera is set up correctly for underwater use.

The E-520 also features the Olympus Supersonic Wave Filter dust-reduction system and is equipped with wireless flash capabilities. The camera accepts CompactFlash Type I and II, Microdrives, and xD-Picture Cards.

Price: $599.99; $699.99 with Zuiko Digital 28-84mm equivalent f3.5-f5.6 lens.
