Pantone published their first color guide in 1963, but literature on color dates back as early as 1692. The Bibliothèque Méjanes in Aix-en-Provence houses the 800-page Traité des couleurs servant à la peinture à l’eau by A. Boogert [call number Ms. 1389 (1228)], a hand-drawn detailing of colors whose title translates to A Theory of Colors Used for Water Painting.
