Nur's Expedio 5000 Revolution Debuts

UV-inkjet printer designed for high productivity and high ink coverage.

At the ISA International Sign Expo in Las Vegas, NUR unveiled its Expedio 5000 Revolution-a 16.5-ft rollfed UV-inkjet machine that’s designed for high productivity and high ink coverage and will, says the company, “change the economy of digital billboard printing.”

The 4-color (CMYK) Revolution can reach speeds of 3200 sq ft/hr and offers a top print resolution of 360 dpi addressable, 720 dpi apparent. In addition, to aid in speeding up the workflow it can simultaneously image onto three rolls of media.

Armed with 16 Nova heads from Spectra, which produce 80-pl droplets, the Revolution uses a combination of proprietary hardware and software developments to produce its high ink coverage. And although the machine is primarily intended for billboards and outdoor-signage printing-loaded with Nur’s UV billboard inks-it also can produce graphics for indoor and P-O-P applications using the company’s standard UV inks. In billboard mode, users can expect coverage of approximately 1940 sq ft/l; while in regular mode, coverage is 880 sq ft/l. Outdoor durability for the inks is up to 2 yr UV- and water- resistance without coating or lamination.

The Revolution utilizes mercury UV lamps to cure its inks. The curing system also includes a standard shutters- control mechanism that offers improved curing modes and glossy prints by changing the times between printing and curing, using head or tail curing modes.

Other Revolution features of note:

* The printer employs an integrated collection system, which is a dual-mode collector-it collects either on a shaft or directly on an empty core. The on-core collector capability allows users to switch out an empty core while printing, without having to stop the machine before the feeder runs out of media.

* A special absorbing paper system supports mesh printing.

* Nur offers an optional double-sided printing mechanism to produce backlit and blockout applications, which is compatible with media up to 10.5-ft wide.

* One RIP is included with the printer-customers choose between GrandRip+ by Caldera or SofRIP by Wasatch.

The Revolution is compatible with a wide range of substrates, including specialty and uncoated media, paper, mesh, vinyl, textiles, blueback paper, self-adhesive vinyl, banner material, synthetic paper, Tyvek, and more.

Nur also showed off an alpha prototype of its 10.5-ft UV-curable Expedio 3200 complete with a flatbed module (accommodating media up to 1-in. thick) that always stays in place, so changeover from roll to rigid is super-fast. The flatbed module is expected to be released in August and is designed for shops that produce mostly roll-to-roll graphics, but still have an ongoing need for rigid printing. This flatbed module can be added to any Expedio 3200.
