Nikon's D40x Camera

10.2-Mpxl digital SLR boasts improved image-processing engine.

Nikon has introduced its D40x digital SLR. A sister camera to the company’s D40, the new D40x adds higher 10.2-Mpxl resolution, faster continuous shooting capability (3 frames/sec vs 2.5 frames/sec on the D40), and wider ISO sensitivity (100-1600 vs 200-1600 on the D40).

Features include: an 0.18-sec power-up; an improved Nikon Image Processing Engine; 2.5-in. color LCD screen; a new Assist Images menu that helps users select appropriate settings for various camera features as well as an automated Digital Vari-Program mode that allows users to capture various types of scenes without understanding certain camera settings.

The D40x also features a Retouch menu for in-camera editing, including: D-Lighting, to brighten dark pictures and correct red-eye; Trim, for creative cropping; Monochrome, for black-and-white, sepia, and cyanotype images; Filter Effects; and more.

Estimated selling price: $729.95, body only; $799.95, with 3x zoom 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor lens.

Nikon also has introduced its new 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor lens-a compact telephoto zoom Nikkor lens that offers Nikon’s Vibration Reduction technology. Engineered for the company’s DX line of SLRs, including the new D40x, the lens also incorporates Extra Low Dispersion glass and Silent Wave Motor technology. Estimated selling price: $249.95.
