Successor of Capture 4, the new Nikon Capture NX software is designed for digital-image processing and editing. Capture NX can edit JPEG and TIFF images from any source, but only supports Nikon RAW NEF images from Nikon cameras.

One of Capture NX”?s new features is its U Point technology, which allows photographers to edit pictures by selectively enhancing specific areas of a picture, without the use of masks, selections, or layers. Users simply select a control point and adjust its slider until they see the image as they like it. Control points include: Color Control Points, including size, hue, saturation, and brightness; Show Selection for accurate control; Black, White, Neutral Control Points; and Red-Eye Reduction.

Other features include: a Browser that enables users to sort, compare, and apply batch processes directly; an Edit List that facilitates effective image enhancement; a simplified Batch Processing; and a fully color-managed workflow.

A 30-day trial version is available for download from the Nikon website. Capture NX is compatible with Windows XP, XP Professional, or 2000 and Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later.

Estimated selling price: $149.99; limited-time upgrade price of $89.99 for Nikon Capture 4 users in the US market.
