Nikon Announces D80 SLR

Nikon’s latest digital SLR is the D80, a 10.2-Mplx camera with Nikon DX -format CCD image sensor. Featuring compatibility with more than 43 AF Nikkor lenses, the D80 offers continuous shooting rates of 3 frames/sec in bursts up to 100 consecutive JPEG or 6 RAW images. It powers up in 0.18 sec, offers 3D-Color Matrix Metering II, and has a 2.5-in.LCD monitor with a 170? viewing angle.

The D80 comes equipped with many auto features, including: an 11-area auto focus (AF) system with a new Auto-area AF mode and center sensor; ISO Auto mode to adjust sensitivity between ISA 100 and 600; and seven automated Digital Vari-Programs that optimize white balance, sharpening, tone, color, saturation, and hue to match the scene. In addition, the camera offers options such as creative in-camera effects and editing functions in the Retouch menu (red-eye correction, image overlay, monochrome settings, filter effects, and D-lighting), and Multiple Exposure shooting option that produces an effect resembling multiple-exposure techniques used with film.

The camera uses SD memory cards (SDHC compatible) for in-camera storage and has a USB interface for fast image transfer. It comes with PictureProject software for organizing, editing, and sharing images, and also supports Capture NX optional software for photo editing RAW (NEF) images.

MSRP: D80, $999.95 for body only; $1299.95 packaged with 18-135mm DX lens. No shipping date has yet to be established.

In addition, Nikon has announced a compact, lightweight 7.5x zoom lens that is exclusively for use with its DX-format digital SLRs. The new AD-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED features a Nikon ED glass element, aspherical lens elements, and Silent Wave Motor (for quiet focusing). It offers a focal length of 18-135mm.
