New Spyder3 from Datacolor

Datacolor has introduced its Spyder3 line of display-calibration and printer-profiling solutions. Designed for photographers and digital-imaging professionals, the new product line initially comprises the Spyder3Elite and Spyder3Studio.

The Spyder3Elite includes Datacolor’s Spyder3 colorimeter with desktop docking base, tripod mount, and Spyder3Elite software. The Spyder3 colorimeter features a seven-detector color engine, with a large light aperture for precise calibration of LCDs and CRTs, as well as projector and notebook displays. Its new features include: a ReCal option, enabling the user to reduce full-calibration time by more than half allowing for easy calibration on a frequent basis or before any important project; SpyderProof color-control feature, allowing users to evaluate calibration with a before and after mode-users can view four quadrants of images to specifically evaluate saturated colors, skin tones, gradients, and black-and-white images to ensure the desired calibration results; Intelligent Ambient Light Control, for automatically measuring a room’s ambient light (it also captures a history of light conditions); and unlimited target choices; dual-mode software (Assistant or Expert interfaces).

The Spyder3Studio is designed to address color management through advanced display calibration as well as printer profiling, offering accuracy and control across all digital-imaging tools. It includes the Spyder3 colorimeter as well as the Spyder3Elite software, and adds: a Datacolor 1005 spectrocolorimeter and base, 6-in. USB cable, and a new SpyderGuide.

Price: Spyder3Elite, $279; Spyder3Studio, $599. Each is compatible with Mac OSX (10.3 or higher) and Windows 2000, XP 32/64 and Vista 32/64.
