Mimaki Debuts JV5 Series

Mimaki introduced its new JV5 series solvent-printer line at ISA, which includes the JV5-130S and the JV5-160S. In addition, the company privately showcased the IPF-1326, a flatbed UV-curable printer that will make its debut later this year.

Both the JV5-130S (54-in.) and JV5-160s (64-in.) printers feature a newly developed print head that carries four times as many nozzles as Mimaki”?s JV3 series of printers and a new staggered head configuration.

The printers can hit a top print speed of 430 sq ft/hr at 540 x 1080 dpi, which Mimaki is recommending as a “close sign and photorealism resolution.”? This resolution, says Mimaki marketing manager Steve Urmano, “gives the best of both worlds”?image quality and speed.”? At 1440 dpi, the top resolution, the JV5s can produce at 264 sq ft/hr.

Mimaki is making two different solvent inks available for the JV5 line:
“? ES-3 “eco solvent”? inks (CMYKcm)”?designed for safety, low-odor, and drying capability, these inks require no exhaust ventilation system in most room environments (small rooms may need exhaust to eliminate odors), Mimaki reports).
“? HS-1 “rugged solvent”? inks (CMYK; CMYKcm “under development”?)”?geared to high scratch-resistance and durability, these inks require a forced ventilation system.

Also on the drawing board: an 8-color (CMYKcm plus orange and green) aqueous version of the JV5 intended for fine-art and sublimation applications.

Both JV5 printers are equipped with four new automatic functions: auto nozzle-out detection; auto-adjusting head gap and detection of media thickness; auto-media-feeding compensation (without influence of media weight); and auto-change double ink cartridges (allows for long, consistent printing).

The printers ship with Mimaki”?s Raster Link Pro II RIP, which features Wasatch core technology. Onyx, SAi, and Wasatch will all support the JV5 series machines, Mimaki reports.

A pre-heater and post-heater are standard; optional is an external dryer, which can speed drying”?particularly for those using the ES-3 inks.

Prices: $37,995, JV5-130S; $39,995, JV5-160S. Note: The JV5 series of printers will eventually supplant the JV3 printers in Mimaki”?s lineup; the JV3 series will remain available through the autumn of this year, says Urmano.

In addition, at a remote demo site at the Orange County Convention Center, Mimaki previewed an early version of its IPF-1326, a flatbed UV-curable printer that it says will be available in final form at this year”?s SGIA show in Las Vegas.

A 7-color printer (CMYKcm + white), the IPF-1326 uses Xaar printheads and will offer a print size of 4 x 8 ft, a resolution up to 1200 x 1200 dpi, and a max print speed of 128 sq ft/hr at 600 x 600 dpi in 4-pass mode (at 1200 x 1200 dpi, it can hit 80.7 sq ft/hr in 8-pass mode). In its present design, it can handle media up to 1-in. thick, but the company may modify that to accommodate media up to 2-in. thick by the time it makes its debut. No price has yet been set.
