At SGIA Digital Expo, MacDermid ColorSpan unveiled its latest DisplayMaker”?the 98UVX. Developed as an extension of the DisplayMaker 72UVX format, this 4-color printer has similar features, but with a 98.5-in. print width. It prints on rigid (up to 0.5-in. thick) or flexible rollfed media. It also features a 16-MicroQuad printhead array that prints with 25-picoliter drops of ink and delivers true 600 x 600-dpi quality.

Printing speeds of the 98UVX include 438 sq ft/hr in Billboard mode (600 x 600 dpi); Production mode has a 600 x 600-dpi mode (225 sq ft/hr) or 600 x 300-dpi option for 438 sq ft/hr; and High-Quality mode's 600 x 600 dpi yields 112 sq ft/hr.

The 98UVX uses ColorSpan pigmented SolaChrome UV inks. These inks are available in 3-liter containers and offer 2- to 3-yr outdoor display life, the company reports.

Like the DisplayMaker 72UVX, the 98UVX also has the Advanced Automation Eye. This comprises a high-res imaging sensor, a colorimetric spectrophotometer, and software to automate the setup and calibration for accurate printing.

Its front and rear roller tables and pinch roller system allows for easy insertion of rigid materials up to 60-in. long. The 98UVX also offers edge-to-edge printing on rigid media. Optional equipment includes a second set of roller tables to support rigid materials up to 120-in. long.

Price: $104,995. The printer comes with 4 liters of ink, 3 liters of printhead cleaning solution, 600 sq ft of banner vinyl, installation, and on-site training.

In addition, ColorSpan announced that it has entered into a market alliance with Zund America to co-promote digital-workflow solutions featuring ColorSpan UV-curable inkjet printers and Zund's precision cutters for the display-graphics market. As part of the agreement, Colorspan displayed a Zund system at its booth at the SGIA Digital Expo booth in Phoenix, and Zund will supply an M-series cutter to ColorSpan's demonstration facility in Eden Prairie, MN.

“Showing customers how much labor and materials they can save by printing directly to rigid displays and sign boards with our line of DisplayMaker printers in only half of the benefit of moving to a digital environment,” says Bruce Butler, ColorSpan marketing director. “The next logical step is to use the digital information to automate the cutting and finishing of the print to further reduce labor and improve throughput and accuracy.”

“We are convinced that this alliance with ColorSpan will benefit customers in numerous ways,” says Oliver Zund, president of Zund America. “The ability to add shape to a printed media gives much more value to the end product.”
