KPG Direct-Imaging Press Combines Offset-Print Quality with Fast Turnaround

Helps printers cut costs and capture new business

Two complaints about toner-based digital color presses has been that their output doesn't “feel” like traditional offset and the range of printable substrates is limited. Presstek's proprietary direct-imaging technology avoids those problems by combining the short-run, fast-turnaround capabilities of digital printing with traditional, ink-on-paper offset printing. In Presstek's direct-imaging technology, a laser diode is used to take digital color files straight from the prepress network and image those files directly onto the printing plate on press, without film and without chemicals. High-powered infrared lasers remove the top image-forming layers from the plates to exposes the ink-receptive base layer for imaging. This sharply reduces makeready time.

To give commercial printers and digital service bureaus an opportunity to capitalize on the growing market demand for high-quality, short-tunaround color printing, Kodak Polychrome Graphics has incorporated Presstek's technology in their new DirectPress 5034 DI system. The system is recommended for print runs from 350 to 15,000 pieces.

According to KPG Vice President John Schloff, the system allows commercial print firms and digital service bureaus to capture jobs they are missing today, and cut costs on current projects. (Kodak Polychrome Graphics:
